I define friendship as a person you can trust and rely on in a bad situation. One main thing I look at for a good friend is if I can tell them something and know that they won’t tell anyone about it. A good friendship starts by meeting new people and telling them a small secret. The ones that go and tell other people that small secret aren’t going to be your true friend.
To be able to show good friendship you need to meet at least three requirements. The first is being there for your friend. This means that if they need your help with something you won’t give them bad advice; you would point them in the right direction. There was one time I remember that I asked a friend for help and they left me hanging. They gave me bad advice and because I thought they were a good friend to me I took it and then got in a lot of trouble. The second thing is that you should be able to come and help them out in a time of need. That doesn’t mean you have to bail them out of jail at three in the morning, but to be there when it matters. You should be someone they can count on and rely on if they needed something. Like taking them home from school. If a friend asks for a ride you should give it to them; don’t say yea sure and then leave them standing there. The third thing is to hang out with them when you make plans. Now that doesn’t mean they are the only ones you can do things with, but if you say you will do something don’t just drop them for something better. A good example of this is if you have a girlfriend that you haven’t seen for a while and she calls and says she wants you to come over but you already have plans with your friend, go with your friend don’t ditch him to hang out with your girlfriend because friend are friends forever, girlfriends change over time.
If you can follow these three steps then you will make a good friend to someone and being there for them means that they will be there for you also. Just remember that a good friend looks out for the ones they like and drops the ones they don’t. If you can stay away from that then people will love for you to be there friend
